Heel pain
Some weeks ago, my mom felt pain on the heel/ sole area and during her medical check up, her Dr advised her to get an x-ray. From the x-ray, the Dr spotted spurs on both her feet. Judging from my mom's history (she's not athletic or did extensive walking or standing throughout her life), we opted for the wait-and-see to see if the pain gets worse before we seek treatment from an orthopaedic. In the meantime, I found some information (on my own diagnosis... trying to be a smart alec) on heel spurs and a stretching exercise that would reduce the pain. My mom tried the exercise and it did reduce the pain a bit, but she was still in pain. Not wanting to see her in pain and walking in a limping manner in the house, we finally went and see an orthopaedic.
The Dr's diagnosis:
1. It wasn't heel spur cos my mom felt pain only on 1 foot and both her feet have spurs
2. Heel spurs don't cause pain (or maybe not to the extend that you have to limp when walking)
3. She just started a new exercise (yup, mom started line dancing)
Dr's prescription:
1. Anti-inflammatory medication
2. Supplement for the nerves
3. Gel to apply on the area that is painful
4. Get comfortable shoes (about 1 inch high) like Crocs. Have to start wearing shoes inside the house as well
In most Asian countries, we walk around barefooted on a non-carpeted floor in the house as oppose to the western countries. This will cause our heel not being cushioned enough and after a long period of time, the wear and tear kicks in thus the pain and spurs. On the contrary, we must at least let our feet touch the floor for at least 10 mins a day (another word, earthing la) to release the static/ negative ions accumulated in our body system cos those static is not good for our body. Too much of it may cause adverse reaction to our internal organs. Both opinions are scientifically acceptable to me and that causes me to conclude:
1. Not to over zealous in following what the westerners says (I find that sometimes they are a bit biased)
2. Practice everything in moderation
I have not started wearing shoes in the house yet but would consider wearing them when my feet hurts. When our parts of our body hurts, its a way of telling us that we need to look into it to stop the pain. Ignoring it is simply foolish.
